Winners & Sinners for 2009

See the champions and the setbacks making environmental history

SINNERS - Catch and Release

With fisheries collapsing and the farmed variety an ever-growing environmental risk, it’s easier than ever to imagine a world without seafood. Now, a new study by Environmental Defence argues that some of the riskiest fish to eat in Canada are found in Lake Ontario. The study reviewed the trend in consumption advisories issued by Ontario’s Ministry of Environment and found that 40 percent of 2009 advisories recommended not eating any Lake Ontario fish because of unsafe levels of PCBs, pesticides and dioxins. While anglers have long been wary of larger species—their fat stores more toxins—it’s now recommended that even small fry be avoided.
