As well I would like to add, that many of the naturally eco friendly fibers have been sought after for centuries, mostly by royalty. Cashmere and potentially better fabrics of Alpaca/Guanaco and Vicuna have been extensively produced as luxury fibers. Due to their limited quantities, hand made appeal, remote locations of habitation, it is our own capitalistic approach and natural economics of supply and demand that pushes many of the prices higher. You can still find affordable stylish fashions in the realm of natural fibers.
Hi Judy,

Your comment is a valid one and something a lot of people wonder. However, there are many valid reasons why green living products are more expensive.

First of all the manufacturers of eco-friendly products tend to have higher costs in terms of their production processes. Think of the farmer who sprays his crop with pesticides and ends up with a crop that produces 90% sellable fruit. The organic farmer who uses an all natural treatment may be more at risk to insects which results in a lower yielding crop. Also his all natural fertilizers may cost him more, so he in turn has to place a higher dollar value on his crop once it reaches the stores.

Secondly the materials that go into producing an eco-friendly products are not as readily available to these producers so they may incur more costs when it comes to sourcing eco-friendly fabrics for clothing, for example.

I personally am OK with spending more on eco-friendly products because I do live more simply and tend to consume less. I'm OK with my money going towards businesses who are making extra efforts to protect my health and the earth's well-being. I also am OK with spending more because I feel like it is an investment in my long-term health. Hopefully down the road I am saving myself money because I took greater care to choose less harmful products throughout my life.

These are just my thoughts on it, and I'd love to hear more of yours too!

Hope this helps,

Jessica

I wonder why green living products are so expensive! It seems to me that spending hundreds of dollars on scarves or bags is contrary to the concept of living simply and sustaining the earth's resources. I like the basic reduce, reuse, recycle concept.
