A compact SUV that promises both power and fuel efficiency with a standard182-horsepower engine. The 4-cylinder engine incorporates several fuel-saving technologies and the transmission’s ECO button saves even more fuel in city driving. It’s not a hybrid, but it’s better on highway mileage than some hybrids; ranked 8th in fuel efficiency among SUVs.

Coolest feature: Optional power rear liftgate can be programmed to stop at a specific height to prevent it from hitting a garage ceiling.

Annual fuel cost: $1,638
Mileage (litres/100 km): 9.2 city/6.1 highway
