Endangered Species in Canada

From orcas to owls, help your kids get to know Canada’s species at risk and how to protect them

6/ Barn owl

This charming owl used to live in the hollows of old or dead trees, but habitat loss resulting from urbanization has led them to adapt to mostly living in barns or abandoned buildings. As a result of their dwindling numbers and their inability to cope with harsh winters, they are considered an endangered species both federally and provincially (in Ontario).

Region: Southern British Columbia, Ontario

Take Action: Did you know? Barn owl’s are voracious eaters, hunting close to 20 mice in a single night! Find out what Nature Conservancy of Canada is doing to protect habitat for owls.
