Chocolate with a Conscience

See how a favourite treat is created with this look at the farming and production of fair trade chocolate.

With chocolate makers like Green & Black’s moving their entire chocolate range to become fully fair trade on top of existing organic certification, this much-loved treat is becoming an icon for environmental and social responsibility. Fair Trade is designed to provide farmers with the security of fair prices for their produce and leverage the Fair Trade premium for additional investment for social, environmental and economic development in their communities.

Not all cacao pods turn deep maroon when ripe. The colour is quite variable depending on the variety of cacao and can be yellow, green, orange, red and anywhere in between! Tracey Edelist, www.atasteforchocolate.com
Try closer to home - Chocosol - they carry fairtrade chocolate
I have yet to try Green & Black's Products but I will definitely purchase now that I know they are free trade. I always purchase Divine at Ten Thousand Villages because it is fair trade as well. I am looking forward to buying chocolate this weekend for Valentines. Thank-you for all your wonderful and helpful articles.
That's amazing. I had no idea that's how chocolate was made.
Amanda: Let's take this one step further. I have a Toronto based contact for you. Sincerely, Jai Jot Lafayette 416-935-1585
