Tea Swamp
At East 16th and Sophia, one block East of Main, the interestingly named Tea Swamp Community Gardens bloom. The twenty plots cost only $15 a year to rent and are on average 100 square feet. Why the name “Tea Swamp” gardens? For centuries Mt Pleasant used to be a dense forest, bisected by a trail traveled by First Nations people and wildlife. Along the trail was an opening in the forest where a beaver dam had backed up a creek forming a large swamp around which wild Labrador tea used to grow and giving these beautiful Community Gardens their name.
