Friendly Flooring

With a toddler and another munchkin on the way, the decision to move from a loft apartment to a house with a backyard was easy. What took more work was researching the best ways to be green as we built our home, but it was priority number one for our family. Luckily, the development of so many great products in the green marketplace over the past several years meant there was no reason to sacrifice style and design for an eco choice. Especially when it came to flooring.

Through our research we stumbled upon many interesting choices from cork to bamboo. But our favourite find was with a company called The Nadurra Wood Corporation (The Eco-Wood Source). Why was this company so different compared to others? For us it wasn’t just about Nadurra’s products being green (though we will share our findings with so you too can be in the know), it was that the company itself is green and proud to show its badges of “econess”.

Founded in 2005, Nadurra has been able to obtain FSC Certification, they are a member of the Canada Green building Council and are under the ISO Environmental Management System. (Note: as a green researcher, I recognize the cost of applying for third-party certifications, and understand that not all businesses can afford to make such an investment when starting out.)

They have also chosen to purchase Bullfrog Power  and, because the company is a member of the National Wood Flooring Association, we knew they were qualified and trustworthy when it came to installation.

The flooring we loved was part of Nadurra’s Eco Collection. Nadurra tests its low-VOC flooring at an independent Canadian lab that checks for formaldehyde content. They have even gone so far as to research the glues used to make sure they adhere to the European E-0 program and the California Air Resources Board Phase 1 & 2 programs. (The company uses a water-based solvent from Germany.) Their Eco Collection is also L.E.E.D Qualified as a product!

We decided to go with the Carbonized Composite bamboo planks from their Composite FSC Certified line. We were able to pick from some beautiful colors (though Nadurra does not stain their wood) and found our perfect match. Nadurra also has a Reclaimed Heritage Collection, for which they use wood that would otherwise be scrapped or potentially burned, reworking it so it can be used for flooring.

The experience of working with Nadurra was fun and easy. They were happy to share their knowledge and were ever so patient with my never-ending questions about their products. We then found out that they also have a lineup of kitchen cabinetry (but maybe we can chat about that in another article!).

With such a great experience, we reached out to Nadurra to see how we could share their products with you. We’re thrilled that they’ve offered up a contest to win 100 sq. ft. of flooring and one of their favourite books, Ontario’s Old Growth Forests.

The contest will run from August 19th to September 1st at 4 p.m. You can enter to win below
