The Village Green

A blog about how Canadians can achieve energy independence by powering down and then powering up the right way.

Question – what would you do if your electricity bill doubled overnight?  Just wondering.

I was on the phone this morning with some colleagues in Pennsylvania and their clients down there have growing concern – real concern actually – about electricity rate caps which are set to come off their electricity prices in January 2010.

The residential base rate for electricity in Ontario is $0.057/kWh.  In Pennsylvania it’s $0.086/kWh, a 51% difference.  With the rate cap removal, people in the state are expecting rate increases as high as 30%.  That would bring their residential electricity rate to $0.1118/kWh, essentially double what we pay in Ontario.

My colleagues are telling me their clients are doing what they can.  Businesses will lay off people, after all, lights and fridges have to stay on.  Families will make do or do without.  Increasingly, people will do without.

Again, what would you do if your electricity bill doubled overnight?

Just wondering.
