Nothings celebrates summer like just-picked crunchy and vibrant fruits and veggies. Keep the following on hand and you will never find yourself short of a perfect summer-time meal. Farmers Markets are your best resource for these foods - you will not only be purchasing the freshest product available which will keep longer, but you are more likely to purchase a locally grown product which supports our economy and has a lower carbon footprint. So go ahead - nows the time to enjoy summers best!

Summers Best Fruit:Blueberries

Blueberries are best eaten between July and September. Choose firm, bright ones and store in a covered container in the fridge. They’ll remain plump and fresh for about a week. Wild blueberries are smaller and packed with more flavour than the bigger variety - definitely worth a taste if you can get your hands on them!

Blueberries are incredibly versatile and can be eaten fresh, sprinkled over morning granola or added to salads, vinaigrettes or smoothies.


You have probably noticed barrels full of fresh cherries bursting fro your farmers market or grocery store shelves. They peak in late June and hold out until early August. Choose plump, firm cherries that are still attached to their stems and are deep red or plum in colour. They can be stored for a few days in the fridge.

Try it

Summertime cherries are perfect eaten raw and fresh - just wash and enjoy. Or, pit cherries and add to any summer salad for a truly inspired taste! To enhance ripening process, place in a paper bag on the counter.


Juicy and ripe peaches are available mid-July to mid-September. They ripen quickly so unless you are planning to eat the day of, purchase slightly firm.

Try it

Peaches are great grilled on the bbq - simply slice in half and remove pit. Then drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and sprinkle with brown sugar and sea salt. Place cut side down on hot bbq and grill until slightly softened and caramelized. Slice and add to any salad for a delicious treat.


Raspberries are mini jewels that are best in July, but they can be found fresh until September. Purchase on the day you are planning to eat as they perish quickly. Wash immediately prior to eating and store in fridge until ready to eat.

Try it

Add to smoothies, granola, or yogurt for a healthy and delicious breakfast.


Ontario strawberries are sensational from early June to late July. As they are so soft and often packed tightly, pick out bruised, moldy berries and rinse only just before eating. Store in the container they were purchased in in your fridge. Best eaten within 2 to 3 days.

Try them

Slice strawberries and reduce in a pan over medium heat with some sugar and balsamic vinegar. Spoon over vanilla ice cream for a sensational treat! Stay tuned for more information on summers best veggies! image courtesy of
