Last night my skin was feeling extra icky (that truly is the best word to describe it) -- the result of treacherous heat combined with a large bag of popcorn I ate while finding refuge in the air-conditioned Mecca of the movie theater. I needed a scrub that would let my skin start afresh. So, into the kitchen with me.
"Kitchen!?!" you may say. Yes -- the kitchen where I set out to make a scrub from scratch. Without much idea of what I was doing, I started pulling ingredient from the baking cabinet, starting with brown sugar and oats. I remembered hearing that mixture was used at spas for a body scrub.
I poured the two into a bowl, added squirt of honey for texture, added a little water, mixed until I found the consistency to my liking, and ta-da! I had in front of me an inexpensive, all natural, food-grade, preservative-free face scrub straight from the bulk aisle!
The ground oats with their incredible absorption quell itchy or flaky skin, actually softening the surface. Even better -- they are completely hypoallergenic. Brown sugar exfoliates and unclogs the pores without being overly drying on even my most sensitive skin (molasses locks in moisture). And antibacterial honey acts as a "smoother-outer" (very very technical term, of course). To me, that forms the ultimate trifecta!
All it takes is a light massage and warm rinse, and the dead cells are sloughed away to reveal a new layer of skin that feels so smooth and pure while being able to "breathe," even in the thick summer air! Another major plus: you will smell like the most delicious Sunday morning breakfast-in-bed ever!
With one unconventional skin care recipe under your belt, let your imagination run wild. Avocado and eggs?! Yes! - Not brave enough to try that?? Hold tight and I'll be back shortly with mask recipes and more!
