Pomegranate may be the buzzword on everyone's lips at the moment but the fruit has been around forever - literally.
It dates back to ancient civilizations and was first used in its native Persia eventually being naturalized over the whole Mediterranean region including Israel, Libya and Iran. From there is moved into India and China. It was first brought to California in the 1800s.
This oldest of fruit has great religious symbolism; it's mentioned in ancient Herbew, Arab and Chinese texts and there are references in the bible. Many scholars believe it's the true Tree of Life and not the apple. The pomegranate even has a staring role in Greek myth of Persephone and the Underworld.
It's been described as containing the oil of life and for many cultures symbolizes health, eternal life, and fertility... sounds good to me!
As a young girl, I found the tough hard fruit was a terrific prop for keeping windows open in my house.
Oh, the never-ending uses of the pomegranate! We are just beginning to get acquainted with the seemingly endless health benefits of pomegranates -- either as nutrition for the body or food for the skin ("skinfood").
I'm addicted to the seeds (or "arils" as they are called officially), which are incredibly delicious and versatile. They can be used in endless both sweet and savory dishes. I love to eat the juicy capsules alone as a snack, toss some into salads, combine the fruit with meats or incorporate it into chocolate brittle.
But now onto the brilliant skin care properties, of which there are man. Stay tuned for some amazing information on how pomegranates can help your skin!
