Life in the Green Lane

Environmental journalist Candice Batista shares video clips and eco-savvy advice from her TV show, A Greener Toronto.

Spring is almost in the air, and for some if us that means its time to move, moving from house to house can have an impact on the environment, here’s what you need to know to make your move more earth friendly. Before you pack anything, spring clean or have a garage sale, that’ll help you get rid of a lot of junk, it’ll also help you reduce the amount of energy you use. If you can’t have a garage sale, you can always sell your old stuff online. To pack up all you stuff, pick up used boxes from grocery stores and make sure you recycle them when you are done. Another option is to use rubber containers, these are great because you can use them as storage when you are done with them. Bubble wrap is good if you have already, if you don’t try these eco options. You can use tea towels to wrap glass and other breakables, newspaper also works well and so do sheets and comforters. Especially for tv’s and computer monitors. Moving yourself is cheaper but your carbon footprint is much bigger, a moving company is the better option because they can move all your stuff at one time helping you reduce your co2 by about 10 percent.
