Life in the Green Lane

Environmental journalist Candice Batista shares video clips and eco-savvy advice from her TV show, A Greener Toronto.

The Green Road!

It’s time for the rules of the road, the Green Road that is! If you’re not ready to take the high road and get rid of your SUV or buy a hybrid, there are still ways to do your part. Keep your tires at the recommended pressure level. For every 3 LBS below, your fuel efficiency is reduced by 1 percent. Turn off your air conditioner or keep it on a lower setting this will help fuel economy. Finally, change your air filter every 6 months. A clean air filter can add up to 10% to your cars fuel efficiency. Now, in today’s world getting from point A to point B can be hard on the environment. But it doesn’t have to be. Consider these alternatives before you put your foot to the pedal. Walk. Get some fresh air and exercise, and find out how quickly you can get across town on your own two feet. Ride your bike. You’ll get there even faster and can easily make the most of your commuting and errands if you need to travel only a few kilometers. Telecommute. Working from home, even one day a week, can make a significant difference in your productivity. You won’t be sitting in traffic and will have fewer distractions. Take the bus. Bring along a good book, your favorite hobby or your laptop. Carpool or vanpool. Share the gas, gain access to the carpool lane and let someone else do the driving for once. Follow theses simple tips and you'll be on your way to the Green Road. Eco Candy,

Good tips. But they are the same ones that we've bee seeing for years, if not decades. It would be naive of us to think that implementing these techniques will save the planet. Even if everyone did all of the above the planet would still be in big trouble. All it would do is give us a little more time to make the real changes that need to happen.
