Before you say "I do," think green

If you’re walking down the aisle this summer, why not make it a green aisle? Contrary to popular belief, greening your wedding doesn’t mean sacrificing on your special day. Go local. Pick a venue that’s close to home, both for you and your guests.

You’ll be green because: You’re cutting down on transportation, meaning less carbon emissions connected to your big day.

You’ll save money because: Fewer people have to travel, and you’ll cut down on hotel bills and transport costs.

Now, you can’t have a wedding without the invitation, or can you? Email the details of your special day to your guests. This may not work for everyone, especially Granny Elaine. If you must use paper invitations, make sure you use recycled paper. And here’s a neat idea: Ask your guests to use your invitation as a wedding card.

You’ll be green because: You’re using less paper, you're reducing your CO2 emissions and your guests are using fewer trees by recycling your invitation.

You’ll save money because: You’re not buying expensive stationary and tons of stamps.

Looking fabulous on your special day is a must, but does the dress really need to be such a cost to you and the environment? Think about borrowing, renting or making your dress. Grooms have been renting tuxes forever.

You’ll be green because: Reusing is always better for the environment than buying something new.

You’ll save money because: You can buy a secondhand wedding dress or rent a dress for around $150. Both of these options will save you hundreds.

When setting your menu, think local and organic. When it comes to the wine, keep in mind where it's coming from.

You’ll be green because: You’re not using food transported from all around the world, and you’re contributing to your local economy.

You’ll save money because: You’re sourcing local farmers and vendors who can offer you a better deal because you are close to home.

Cut down on your transportation costs by traveling in a hybrid or a horse and cart. How romantic!

You’ll be green because: Cutting down on transport means you’re cutting down your carbon footprint.

You’ll save money because: Anything is cheaper than a stretch limo.

The wedding would not be the same without the honeymoon. Consider staying local, but keep in mind the most important thing is being together. If you are traveling, find the best way to get there and pick hotels or resorts that are eco-conscious.

You’ll be green because: Cutting down on transport means you’re cutting your carbon footprint.

You’ll save money because: Taking your honeymoon in this province will be cheaper than flying somewhere else.
