Children are putting many hours a day in front of electronic screens but far less exploring the great outdoors. Help the kids get comfortable with nature with an outdoor sleepover party where no emissions-heavy traveling is required. Here are some general rules of the game:
Set up the location
The idea is to simulate a remote camping adventure so limit multiple trips back and forth into the house. Get all the equipment, food and drink ready and then pretend you're far away from the conveniences of home. If you've got a big backyard then pitch your tent and away you go, but smaller yards can be intimate and fun too. Don't worry about a lack of grass, you can pitch a tent anywhere including on concrete, wood or brick as long as you have plenty of air mattresses! Once the spot has been chosen, do a quick cleanup by raking or sweeping the area then let the kids decide to sleep under the stars or under canvas. Be mindful of the weather and be prepared to move inside if there is a sudden down pour. Gazebos are an ideal location since they are roofed structure and if screened, bugs will be kept out as well.
If you're using a tent, it's a good idea to set it up ahead of time to air it out or make sure there are no broken or missing parts. Clean up any mildew with vinegar mixed with water. If you're borrowing a tent, pick it up before the party and do a dry-run before setting it up.
The menu
Eating outdoors is a huge part of the fun. If you're using a bonfire then kept the menu basic with veggie dogs or sausages the kids can cook themselves (with some supervision). If you can’t do a fire, then a BBQ is the next best thing and then you could throw on a few veggie burgers and grill favourites. For dessert: roasted marshmallows or smores are a tasty classic.
Fun times to remember
Ban the game boys, turn off the cell phones and get the kids ready for some campfire fun:
Storytelling. Get everyone to bring his or her favourite scary story.
Stargazing. Get some star charts and find some stellar constellations.
Shadow puppets. Bring out the flashlights and teach the kids some finger magic.
Exploring. Take the kids on a journey around the garden to see if they recognize everything without the light. Try to spot some fireflies and listen for crickets and frogs. Help your kids get accustomed to feeling safe even in the dark.
Singing. Who can resist those corny campfire songs?
Catching sight of sunrise. Get those sleepyheads up early enough to see the miracle of morning light.
Camping Safety
Here are some tips for a safe and secure sleepover:
• Ensure you have first aid on hand (here are ideas for a Natural First Aid kit).
• If you start before 4pm, make sure you take precautions to prevent anyone getting sunstroke or getting bitten. Pick from these natural sunscreen and bug repellent suggestions.
• Make sure all walkways inside to the toilet are well lit. Solar lights are a good choice since they can be moved around easily.
• Make sure all gates have motion detection lights.
• Let the family dog join the sleepover.
• Have the contact info of all parents in case emergency pick-ups are required.
Anytime you are using an outdoor fireplace or setting up a bonfire, special precautions must be taken. For your campout, ensure that you keep it as far away as possible from the tents. Forget the fire if there is any wind and keep a hose, bucket of water, sand or fire extinguisher within easy reach. Also make sure the fire is out completely before going to bed.
