It’s so easy to eat well in the summer. Local produce stands and farmers’ markets overflow with a juicy and colorful bounty, calling on our inner foodies to create fabulous dishes for friends and family.

However, even the most experienced food enthusiast needs a little inspiration now and then. And we’re all becoming more conscious — and critical— of the processes our food undergoes, from farming practices to transport. Well, now there’s an event in Toronto where you can indulge your inner foodie and have eco-friendly options at every turn.

On the weekend of August 14th and 15th, the first annual Conscious Food Festival will take place at the city’s Fork York National Historic Site! The festival is dedicated to sustainable food and healthy living.

Emma Brown, co-founder of the event, says, “The Conscious Food Festival will demonstrate the growth of the local food movement and increase recognition of the role it plays in creating a sustainable future.”

We at Green Living believe the best way to learn about food is through sampling (OK, who doesn’t?). And with tastings from local restaurants paired with refreshing beverages, chef demonstrations and a chance to pick from an onsite garden, this is sure fulfill all your cravings. If your mouth isn’t full, go ahead and participate in the open forums and debates. And if you’re still munching, you can sit, enjoy and listen to live music.

When it comes to being sustainable, this festival is practicing what it preaches, too. It’s in a location easily accessible by public transportation or by walking and is Bullfrog Powered. Organizers also ask that you bring your own grocery bags for shopping.

“The Conscious Food Festival will give thousands of people the chance to meet the pioneers paving the way to a secure food system,” says Brown. “The future is here — and it tastes mighty fine!”

The festival runs from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. August 14th and 15th. Click here for more info.
