Spring is a funny time of year for keeping warm and dry. We checked with our favourite green designers to see what they are offering for spring coats and jackets.

Green intrigue
Emily Katz has come out with the perfectly recycled trench coat. Constructed from recycled polyester and a hemp denim blend, this coat has a drop skirt waist with tailored styling, welt upper pockets and deep pockets below. A very feminine take on the trench coat.

For a shorter and sassier style, try her Portland Swing Coat. This classic coat with 3/4 sleeves has a wide panel swing cut topped off with a broad, rounded flat collar and flat bow at the neck. The water resistant fleece is perfect for spring showers.

Both coats are available online at greenloop.

Greenloop also sells the Nature vs. Future Eco Fleece Jacket. This is a more sophisticated version of the fleece jacket with an asymmetrical fit and adjustable collar. The two button overlap outside closure (one inside) and the thumb holes at the wrists add that extra flair. The 87 percent recycled polyester breathes and dries quickly. A great choice for eco-chic spring wear.

Elegant hemp
Another versatile online retailer, The Hempest offers the elegant Monk's Hood Jacket in rust, black and green. This light jacket has an asymmetrical opening with arched style lines over breast and wooden toggle closures offset by a deep round hood. Made of 55 percent hemp and 45 percent organic cotton, this jacket is universally slimming.

Hempest also carries some of the classic coats from Earth Speaks. The understated Geneva Coat has simple clean lines with front pockets, tiger eye buttons and silk lining. Available in natural, khaki and black.

For a dramatic statement try on the full length Toulouse Coat, a cross-belt back, three-button, long flowing coat with two side pockets, finished off with stone buttons. Available in sienna, black and white.

Sporty solutions
Rawganique has some great unisex all season jackets. Their Organic Linen Terry Jacket is made from 65 percent organic flax linen and 35 percent organic cotton. The collar is lined with 100 percent flax linen with just enough length to keep you warm.

For windy days, try out the Euro-style Hemp Jacket that breathes. A soft lining provides an extra layer of warmth for chilly spring days. Another great all round jacket is the Tofino Cotton Corduroy Jacket. It's lined with organic cotton flannel that offsets the corduroy fabric (which contains no polyester).

Patagonia sells the versatile Duality Jacket for both men and women. This fully reversible fleece jacket breathes but is still wind resistant. The shell is 100 percent recycled polyester treated with a water-resistant finish and the inside is 100 percent recycled polyester microfleece. Rib knit cuffs and hem keeps the wind out and the two-zippered pockets keep the warmth in. It can be worn alone or as a mid-layer jacket. On sale at Mountain Co-op or at the Patagonia site.
