Baby on the Hip means green

This store is a magnet for environmentally connected moms of Toronto's vibrant Leslieville neighbourhood.

One stop green shopping
The snazzy outer design is warm and inviting, a reflection of the vibe inside. Almost everything in the store has a story since they seek out products that are green, handmade and "made by moms," including the adorable baby toys, which are all organic, fair trade and/or locally made. Some of their hottest selling products, naturally, are re-usable Bamboozle bamboo diapers, and BPA-free baby bottles (that's Bisphenol-A the hormone disrupting chemical compounds found in most conventional plastic baby bottles)

Sustainable fabrics
There is a lot of bamboo at Baby on the Hip: sheets, towels, and hooded towels, plates, bowls and baby-sized cutlery. They also carry the cutest baby clothes from Bamboosa, well, as equally sweet infant line from Speecees. Along with the Speecees organic cotton baby clothes, the store also has its adorable organic plush toys frolicking around the store. They have the popular Babylegs line as well as the new Babylegs Organic line, of course.

For mommie and me
Baby on the Hip carries creams and soaps for your newborns but also natural creams and salves for the comfort and healing of new mothers. They carry the fairly local All Things Jill, a great line of sin care products, but they also carry Moterlove Herbal's organic products for pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and babies, by Colorado's famed herbalist Kathryn Higgins.

Green baby cuisine
Babies ensconced with bamboo plushies can rest on surprisingly affordable organic-cotton crib mattresses. The knowledgeable and green-driven owners feel strongly about feeding good healthy food so carry a variety of baby food mills, and many baby food recipe books. They also have workshops at the store with nutritionists, Doulas and Midwives and other health care and alternative health professionals.

The result is feminine green revolutions, motherly and caring, and making real change one what has to be the most personal level possible, from mother to child.

Baby on the Hip is located at 969 Queen Street East, in Toronto, and open from 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday and open weekends. Read more about them in the Green Living Guide!
