Shed some light

(Apr 8, 2008) Bring the sunshine into your home with eco-lighting made with natural materials and plenty of style.

Green and easy to assemble
The clever little lite2go was created by the ecodesign company Knoend. Ingenious packaging turns into the shade, bulb and fixture so there's very little packaging waste once assembled. One-step set-up includes an electric cord and 7 watt CFL bulb and there's even an amusing instruction video on their website.

Silky romance
Set a romantic mood with the eye-catching Honeycomb Table Lamp, made of swirls of silk worm cocoon atop a wooden base. The company, Wrapables, also sells a dome shaped Bamboo Rafia Lamp along with the elegant Woven Twig Lamp.

Sleek and green
Neaco Hip Home Design offers some graceful lamps that are free of VOCs. The sleek Flow Table Lamp has a stainless steel body, fabric shade and a pull sleeve activated switch while the Lume Table Lamp has soft curves with a bottom bulb that lights up the entire stand for plenty of ambient lighting. The Taj Table or Floor Lamp has a stainless steel rod fitted into a glass stand in red or blue. Very eco-chic.

If space is a limited then opt for the super compact Koncept Z-Bar-LED Desk Lamp. It’s about as wide as your finger and as long as your arm. But don’t let the size fool you. The 66 LEDs cast a bright light with low heat. There are no external joint cords to get in the way and its extremely adjustable.

The new San Franciso store EekoWire Lighting has some very cool and innovative lampshades made with natural materials as well as some high-end eco-lamps and chandeliers from designers around the world.

Mood lighting
The Chiller Mood light features the frosted Premature glass with a semi-transparent finish and open top, equipped with a LED SMD unit and rechargeable power supply lasting up to 10 hours. You can change the colour to suit your mood. Water resistant.

Solway Crystal Salt Lamps give off a warm glow that is relaxing and healthy. Created using ecologically mined crystals, the lamps add negative ions that purify the air and help improve your general well being. Each lamp has been handcrafted by dedicated artisans in a fair trade environment. Soothing and relaxing.

Light up your bed
The Firefly Bedside LECD Light Tray emits a soft, glowing green light to help find your way in the dark. Costing a mere two cents per year to operate it runs on standard electricity and fits easily on any night table.

Practical light
Green Home sells a portable light and radio suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Put it in the sunshine to get seven hours or plug in the AC/DC adaptor to charge the battery at night. Perfect for camping, listening to music on the deck or as an emergency light.

The company also sells the Sun Tunnel Sky Light, a handy roof-to-ceiling skylight system that brings sunlight into hard to reach areas in your home. It’s perfect for the attic, bathroom, kitchen, hallway or closet. The built-in double-sealed roof flashing prevents water build up or any heat escaping.

Artistic green
The New Zealand eco-design outlet, Unless, sells functional art that lights up. The sea-shaped Nautilus lamp is made out of certified hoop pine plywood and shipped out as an easy-to-assemble kit in order to reduce packaging and its carbon footprint.

Seascape sells modern retro lamps combining brushed metal hardware and finished wooden lamp shades in a variety of wood finishes. For some simple elegance check out the Gina Lamp made from woven grass and bamboo that gives off a soft, natural light.
