The Green Toronto Awards took place this weekend at the Green Living Show. The Green Design Award rewards the efforts of a company, project or group working with infrastructure, architecture or industrial design. This year's winners are Kantelberg Designs, Stantec Consulting & Stantec Architecture, and The Living Wall.
Innovation and leadership in industry translates into livable cities with green building projects, improvements to infrastructure, sustainable transportation and waste management.
An example of this could be the renovation of a space or structure, or the development and implementation of a revolutionary environmental design solution. Or it could be developments that promote the well being of occupants or man-made improvements such as re-naturalizing parks, or green technologies or products.
These award-winning Green Design projects improve the health of the City and its residents.
Kantelberg Design
Kantelberg Design is committed to creating sustainable interiors that feature environmentally responsible products and materials. Materials are selected based on durability, recycling or repurposing, local sourcing, energy efficiency, low emission and sustainable manufacturing properties. Their design of Tridel’s Eco Suite included recycled-content drywall, FSC-certified millwork and flooring, natural, sustainable fabric and carpet, and low-VOC drapery and paint.
Stantec Wellington
The new Stantec Consulting & Stantec Architecture office space at 401 Wellington St. West was designed for a growing multidisciplinary office that includes architects, engineers and interior designers. Their goals were to consolidate the diverse groups into an integrated work environment, to express a clear identity and image for this growing company and to create a highly eco-efficient workplace. Careful restoration and renovation ensured the retrofit is targeting LEED Gold certification.
The Living Wall
The Living Wall Inc. founders felt cities needed an alternative to standard noise barriers: walls -- often concrete and covered with graffiti -- and fences made of wood. Their product, The Living Wall, is a free-standing ecological sound-barrier solution and has been used in various applications around Toronto. The Living Wall grows continuously, looks attractive, absorbs sound and contributes to a green and healthy environment.
