The Green Toronto Awards took place this weekend at the Green Living Show. The Health Award rewards an individual or group involved in making Toronto a healthier place to live. The 2008 winners are Edible Toronto, Toronto Bruce Trail Club and Jamie Kennedy.

The quality of life for Torontonians depends on healthy living in a healthy city. As more and more environmentally-affected health concerns arise in the population it becomes even more necessary to strive for clean, green lifestyles.

Edible Toronto
Edible Toronto, a quarterly print magazine, aims to transform the way our communities shop for, cook, eat and relate to the foods that are grown and produced in the Greater Golden Horseshoe region. Owner, publisher and editor Gail Gordon Oliver’s goal was to create a magazine that promoted consumer education in healthy local eating, and in 2007, its first year of publication, she achieved just that.

Toronto Bruce Trail Club
The Bruce Trail Conservancy is committed to establishing a conservation corridor with a public footpath along the Niagara Escarpment. The Toronto Bruce Trail Club (TBTC) works to protect the Escarpment’s ecosystems and to promote environmentally responsible public access to this UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. TBTC offers hiking programs that provide access to wilderness trails (via a bus or carpooling) and to urban hikes via public transit.

Jamie Kennedy
Jamie Kennedy is the culinary mind behind Jamie Kennedy Kitchens, which operates several dining hot spots. His personal values translate into a long-standing commitment to artisanal production and sustainable food practices, reflecting a profound respect for the provenance and quality of the foods we eat. His advocacy and support of the slow food movement, local organic production and related social issues are legendary in the industry.
