The Green Toronto Awards took place this weekend at the Green Living Show. The Community Projects Award rewards the work of volunteers engaged in community building and conservation. This winners were Transforming Toronto, Claire Rodgers, Elizabeth Harris.
Urban stewardship takes many forms, including establishing community gardens and creating wildlife habitat; organizing and hosting local clean up days; restoring long-term health and balance to local ecosystems; preserving and/or restoring natural habitats; demonstrating creative solutions to the meeting points of the natural and urban worlds; and, activism to establish and sustain protected areas and shared community grounds.
Transforming Toronto
Transforming Toronto is a group of citizens who got together in response to the proposed construction of a new high-voltage transmission line to run through east Toronto to Lake Ontario. Since then, Transforming Toronto’s vision has grown much larger. It believes ordinary citizens need to use their power to find and install new sources of electricity through conservation, efficiency and clean, green, small-scale power generation. Volunteers get their message out in face-to-face conversations, soliciting ideas, advice and support.
Claire Rodger
Claire Rodger’s ambition for the Cedarvale Children’s Garden was to create a place where children would be empowered to effect change, both in their immediate community and the greater world. Built on the values of environmental stewardship, community building, participation, non-competitive, multicultural, multi-generational physical activities and co-operation, the garden has had a big impact on the community. Children and many of their families volunteer week after week in the gardening programs.
Elizabeth Harris
Elizabeth Harris was the driving force behind the Friends of Riverdale Farm’s intention to enhance the experience of visiting the farm by establishing a farmers’ market in Riverdale Park, which has been an overwhelming success. She has also worked tirelessly to link Toronto chefs with the producers who come to market so restaurants can come as close as possible to their dream of serving local food.
