Plastic baby bottles found to be toxic

(Feb 7, 2008) A new study released by Environmental Defence found that 90 per cent of plastic baby bottles sold in Canada leach bisphenol A into infant formula, milk or other liquids being drunk by babies.

The chemical is a known hormone disruptor and is associated with adverse health effects, including breast and prostate cancer, early puberty in girls, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and obesity.

Ban is needed

In the tests, nine different polycarbonate bottles from three different major manufacturers were heated and lab results found leaching of bisphenol A with a range of 5-8 ng/ml (parts per billion). Recent scientific research shows that bisphenol A can be harmful at doses below the levels found in the study.

“Clearly, we are putting our babies’ health at risk by using brand name plastic baby bottles,” said Dr. Smith, Executive Director, Environmental Defence. “The federal government must act immediately by banning bisphenol A from baby bottles and other food and beverage containers.”

Top brands most dangerous
The study looked at three major brands of bottles: Gerber, Avent and Playtex. Avent had the highest level of leaching; Playtex brand baby bottles had the lowest. Even more disturbing: levels of bisphenol A leaching increased exponentially when the bottles were heated, with the Avent brand bottles showing the highest concentration.

"The only argument the chemical industry has left is that those levels aren't high enough to warrant concern, and there is no parent on God's green earth that is going to buy that argument," Smith said.
Hastens Canada

Tests were also conducted on baby bottles bought in the U.S. – Avent, Dr. Brown, Evenflo and Disney. The results were similar as those of bottles bought in Canada, with Dr. Brown bottles showing the highest concentration of bisphenol A after the bottles were heated.

Government responding -- slowly
Health Canada is currently conducting a safety review of bisphenol A as part of the federal government’s Chemicals Management Plan, and will recommend whether to regulate the chemical in the coming months. In Ontario, the McGuinty government is creating an expert panel to review toxic chemicals, starting with bisphenol A, with a view to introducing stricter regulations to protect Ontarians’ health. Environmental Defence is calling for a ban on the use of bisphenol A in baby bottles, reusable water bottles and all other food and beverage containers.

Change of mind
Originally both Health Canada and the U.S. FDA concluded bisphenol A didn’t pose a risk. The FDA is now reviewing its findings after studies on mice and other animals have linked the chemical to cancer, reproductive problems, diabetes and learning development disorders.

“With so many scientific studies showing harm in low doses, there’s no excuse for failing to act to protect children’s health,” said Dr. Kapil Khatter, Pollution Policy Advisor for Environmental Defence. “The absence of regulation is needlessly putting children’s health at risk.”

Environmental Defence is also encouraging retailers to stop selling products that contain bisphenol A. including plastic baby bottles. Both Mountain Equipment Co-op and Lululemon recently chose to take bisphenol A products off their shelves. Find safer alternatives in our article The healthy baby bottle.

please advise I bought avent bottles and sterilizer for my newborn grandaughter, should I return and if so why are they still on the market

These bottles are still on the market because neither Canada nor the US government officials have acted on the results of tests! There are tons of websites that has had this info out for quite a while, one is a blog that actually attempted to contact most of the popular bottle brand companies. Some responded with "...as long as people buy them, we will supply them." Apparently parents/grandparents are the only ones that really care about our babies!!

Oh, and another thing... at some point our babies have to come off the boob and go onto a bottle because some of us need to go out and work for a living and don't have the luxury of breastfeeding for the first 5 years of our childs' life. So bottles are a necessity in pretty much the majority of most parents' lives. So rather than jump all over those who use bottles, lets figure out a way to fix the problem, Deb.
And I, for the record think that this website is doing a fantastic job. If you don't think it is environmentally friendly enough, then don't visit.

I just wanted to know if anyone knows how to sterilize glass without it breaking. I've heard that it can't touch the bottom of the pot on the stove, and the glass shouldn't touch other glass that is also being sterilized. Help!

We chose to breastfeed but due to health problems we had to switch to bottles at 5 months, we chose "Born Free", expensive, but my father in the U.K. had told me about the chemical leaching several years ago so I feel that we at least had a head start over many moms in Canada. After reading about all the chemicals found in mattresses we also chose to buy an organic mattress for her. It would be wonderful if one day they decide that after all, these chemicals arn't harmful but for now I don't want to risk our beautiful baby girl because the government and manufactureres of plastic baby bottles chose to not act fast enough.
Best wishes to all the parents and grandparents trying their best to do whats right for our babies.

So now what ?? I have used the Advent bottles for about 10 months and then switched. What sorts of problems are we going to encouter as a result of using this brand ? Where do I go from here ? Yes, stop using them but what harm have I already done ? Where can I find information about the next step ?

so what about playtex drop ins are they ok??/

Hi Maggie,
Playtex drop ins appear to be safe but they are still on the low end of the scale when it comes to bottles. They've received only a fair rating. Read more about BPA and the bottle ratings on this excellent blog: Z recommends: Report on BPA Infant Care products. He investigated over 250 types of bottles and gave them a rating. It should give you some excellent choices and clear up any confusion.

Hope this helps.

What about chewy toys and such? Is there any information about the safety of those type of items?
posted Apr 19, 2008 - 11:53 am by Ashley
On the Playtex website they have a write up about their bottles containing BPA, it says that if you are worried about the BPA, an alternative is the drop in liners. So what I gather from this is that they are saying their drop in liner bottles are fine and GPA free.

I just spent over $200 on bottles, and baby isnt even here yet. Due to sterilizing them incase a hospital trip is soon to come, now I cannot even return them. Unfortunatly, Avent has traped me into using these bottles. I wonder if they companies will supply people with something, insted of making them use these bottles with the information we know now! How did we all survive the last 20 years Im wondering!

Once again I am appauled at what has been put out on the market as, "safe," for us, our children, and infants. It is time the FDA comes to the front for the people and not for the Conglomerates. Cancer treatment is a multi billion dollar business in the US. Isn't that sick. It does not have to be that way. Read your labels, if you are not sure about what is in your product go home and research it. You will be surprised. Stand up and be counted. Say, "no," we do not want our families, chidren suffering, dieing in the name of
of big business. As for glass bottles when my children, mother's children, and grandmother's children were born we used glass. Yes, you may break one now and then but isn't it worth saving your child's life. Baby bottles were made out of glass that could endure being boiled or sterilized as we called it. The same is for canning jars. I have a pressure canner and use jars in it to can food. Times have changed but mostly not for the good. All of you need to start doing research on everything out there on the market. You will be dismayed. Do not trust your health, safety, and well being in the hands of what America is today. Sometimes I am up until the wee hours of morning looking for the truth. Research, heating the bottle in the Microwave. It tells you never heat a bottle in the microwave it puts cancer into it. Our poor children don't have a chance. I care I hope others will also.

What about pacifiers, or even the nipples on glass bottles?

Hi Trish,
It's the same problem as the plastic bottles. Many pacifiers and nipples are made with the same plastic with even more BPA to make them extra pliable. Look for BPA plastic ones or those made from natural rubber.
Hope this helps.

I have bought all avent bottles for my baby. It says that when you heat that bottles thats when it is a problem. Well what if you heated your milk in a seprate container and put it into the bottle is that still a problem. I really dont want to have to go out and buy all new bottle if there is an alternative or safe way to use these ones I would love to hear it.?? !! But of course if there is no safe way, or anything we can do to make these bottles safe I will do whatever is nessasary to keep my baby healthy.

Also, why is this just coming up now, people have been using plasic bottles for years. ??? Please get back to me though.

Hi Mac,
Avent bottles are one of the bottles found to be leaching BPA, especially when heated. There really isn't a safe way to use these bottles since the plastic leaches continually. Some retailers are taking back the bottles and offering refunds or replacements. It depends on where you bought the bottles. You can also try contacting Avent, but it's such a huge multinational company you may have no luck.

It's true we have been using plastic bottles for years and our rates of cancer have also doubled. The whole BPA thing came to light because researchers trying to solve the puzzle of our increased cancer found a connection between BPA (as well as other chemicals) and cancer. We started a love affair with chemicals in the 1950s that has largely gone unchecked. Back then there were a handful of chemicals used, now there are hundreds of thousands.

Our love affair with chemicals is coming to an end as the real truth about chemicals and our health is being presented to the public.

I had both Avent and Dr. Brown bottles. When the rumors first came out, I switched to Playtex drop-ins. They are safe. I did try the Gerber Gentleflow but found that they leaked. I went to Zellers and returned all my Avent products, including bottles, bottle sterilizer and breast pump. They gave me a gift card. However, they did not want to take my Dr. Brown bottles. Does anyone know if there is a store that is taking the back Dr. Brown bottles? Thanks.

My son is almost 3 months. I am using the avdent bottles now after trying the soothies and nuks he won't latch on to anyother bottle what do i do? I am still trying to breastfeed but he dnt latch so needless to say i have to supplemnt with a bottle n fomula. Where can i turn in my bottles in waterville, Me anyone know plz help me make my little man be okay.

Dear Coleta,
Avent does make one line of BPA free bottles and has announced another BPA line being launched this summer called Natural Feeding Bottle made with BES. Dr. Brown bottles are similar to the Avent bottles and your little guy might like those. Also, if you are having trouble with breastfeeding have you consider contacting the La Leche League? They can offer you all sorts of advice and if there is a member in your area even do a house call. Don't despair, there are plenty of tips and techniques to get your guy to latch on. He's got a loving and concerned mother so he's going to be okay, whether he is breast or bottle fed!

You people are nuts.. I love ya. Now days we as a society try to find something wrong with as many things as we can and then go nuts about it. You know I guess yall do have a point. Look at the way yall are acting and think back...I bet yall were fed on plastic....there maybe a point to that...there maybe something wrong with those bottles. If you dont use a product now days cause there is "something wrong with it" theres not many products in the world you could actually use any catagory. Just use the products available and quit listening to crap all the time.

Hi Readers,
It's great to see such a wonderful dialogue going on around the bottles. I've come across a terrific blog that did a thorough investigation about the bottles, even contacting the companies to discuss if they were BPA free. The report is called The Z Report on BPA In Children's Feeding Products, Third Edition. Hope this helps.
