Two most dangerous
Two chemicals in particular are of concern: Diisononyl phthalate (DINP) and bisphenol A (BPA). DINP is used to make plastic flexible and soft for those vinyl products such a teething rings, bath books, rubber ducks and nipples for baby bottles. BPA is used to make polycarbonate plastic -- that hard, clear plastic used in baby bottles, sippy cups and also lining all our canned foods.
Scientists are worried
Enough studies have linked both chemicals with disruption of hormone functions, breast cancer, prostrate cancer and cancer to laboratory animals that scientists are sounding the alarm that there may be similar adverse effects in humans.
Many countries around the world have responded by banning DINP and other phthalates from from infant and children’s products and toys, including the European Union and California. The debate around BPA is still ongoing.
Canadian campaigns
In response to Canada's lack of initiative, the watchdog organization, Enviromnental Defence has started an online petition to ban BPA as well as a daycare campaign for cleaner baby bottles.
Rally Queen's Park
On Tuesday. Nov 20, Environmental Defence is also staging a baby rally, Ban Toxics, Baby! at Queen’s Park at 10 am to urge the government to get cracking and take action now. All babies, toddlers, parents and their supporters are encouraged to come out and make some noise!
The family fun rally features live music from Sho, Mo and the Monkey Bunch, a favourite of little people everywhere. Hot apple cider and snacks will be served.
