A poem for Planet Earth

Image: Charlotte Harvey

(Jul 27, 2007) Ten-year old Charlotte Harvey sent us her poem Planet Earth, written after she was inspired by the program Saving Planet Earth.

PLANET EARTH
If humans had never been
What would Earth be like?
No more fading rainforests,
No more melting ice?

We’re too busy working
To take a look around,
Animals, plants, oceans,
Just waiting to be found!

Of course we’ll never see them,
At this rate anyway!
You’ll never see Earth’s wonders,
‘Cause they’re all wasting away.

Think of a rainforest,
But then a busy town,
If we don’t do something soon
This is where they’re bound!

A turtle trapped in a net
Knows he’s bound to die.
Is the turtle’s future
One big polluted lie?

Orangutan up in the trees,
Listening for sounds.
The terrorizing sound of death,
Of trees crashing to the ground.

O Polar Bear, O mighty,
Stumbling through the snow.

The ice is melting quickly,
But there’s nowhere for you to go.

Tiger in the jungle,
Us humans pose you threat.
Your home is burning slowly,
For you, we’ve caused your death.

Imagine twelve years later,
A news flash from the jungle.
A monkey fossil has been found,
“My fault…” You start to mumble.

Go ahead, ignore this warning,
But there’s a price to pay…
Our Planet will not live long
With us polluting it this way.

The animals beg your pardon,
But they were here first.
Humans, the latest critters,
Happen to be the worst.

This, a fact of danger,
We’re concerned too!
Those poor, suffering animals:
There’s nothing they can do!

Please, just take notice,
Turn off unnecessary lights,
Walk to work and school,
Or you could get a fright.

So turn that car off,
Turn your washing machine down,
And take a look at what’s going on.
Go on: just look around!

Charlotte Harvey attends the Old Priory Junior School in Plympton, Plymouth Devon, UK and her life’s ambition is to become a vet, travel the world and help in saving endangered species and the planet.

A remarkable insight from someone so young into the problems facing us all and the planet we live on. If a 10 year old can understand what awaits us if we stand by and do nothing why can't more adults and politicians - President Bush please take note!
Well done Charlotte!
