(Apr 29, 2008) The Green Toronto Awards took place this weekend at the Green Living Show. The Environmental Achievement Award acknowledges the actions of the City’s own organizations towards improving environmental quality in the City of Toronto.

Outstanding contributions to the quality of the environment by a City of Toronto Agency, Board, Commission or Special Purpose Body or Division.

Named in honour of the late Bob Hunter, this award acknowledges the actions of the City's own organizations towards improving environmental quality in the City of Toronto. It is designed to recognize City of Toronto organizations that have combined their core business with effective strategies and breakthrough creative solutions to maintain and enhance the urban environment.

Children’s Garden & Exploring Toronto programs
The Children’s Garden and Exploring Toronto programs have contributed to a major shift in the way citizens are involved in and relate to their parks and gardens by widely increasing access and encouraging environmental stewardship. Garden programs give children, youth and community members an opportunity to participate in organic gardening, and guided nature walks through parks, ravines and neighbourhoods that inspire ecological awareness and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Toronto Community Housing Corporation
Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) provides housing to over 160,000 tenants, which represents six percent of Toronto’s population. Due to its size, it has the ability to transform the environmental footprint of the city and improve the health and living conditions for all of its inhabitants. It has achieved aggressive targets for conservation, and its initiatives cover both water efficiency and energy conservation.

Better Buildings Partnership
Part of Toronto’s Energy Efficiency Office, the Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) assists owners in reducing their energy consumption. As well, the BBP—New Construction program works with developers to ensure new buildings are constructed to a high standard of efficiency. The BBP has acquired an international reputation as a municipal leader and has supported energy retrofits in some of Toronto’s best-known buildings including City Hall and the Hospital for Sick Children.
